Michel Vaillant
Alto e robusto, simpatico, Michel Vaillant è un bravissimo pilota di Formula 1 anche se non esita a prendere parte a rallie di richiamo internazionale come la Parigi-Dakar e a pilotare moto e motoscafi. Del resto ha sempre avuto i motori nel sangue: il padre Henri è proprietario di un'azienda automobilistica (la Vaillante) e il fratello maggiore Jean-Pierre, che ha lasciato le corse dopo il matrimonio, si occupa della direzione tecnica, assumendo la direzione dell'azienda quando il padre si metterà a riposo. Anche se di tanto in tanto le trame puntano su qualche vicenda sentimentale o su qualche complesso mistero, le corse sono sempre al primo posto, tanto che le storie sembrano cronache realistiche di gare realmente avvenute piuttosto che racconti immaginari.La vita del pilota e della sua famiglia (dove il ruolo della mamma, Elisabeth, è tutt'altro che secondario) si svolge e si sviluppa attraverso le diverse avventure, come un unico grande racconto molto realistico. All'inizio Michel è molto giovane, e i personaggi che gli stanno attorno sono soprattutto la famiglia e i meccanici e i piloti della scuderia Vaillante. Una svolta si ha con l'arrivo di Françoise Latour, nell'episodio "Un 13 in gara" (e si sposeranno nel 1974). Un'accelerazione avventurosa è segnata invece dall'incontro con il pilota statunitense Steve Warson, che appare come temibile rivale già nella prima avventura e diventerà successivamente il suo migliore amico e compagno di imprese in tutto il mondo.
Il personaggio, interamente creato dal francese Jean Graton, si delinea nella storia completa "Sans rancune" (Senza rancore) pubblicata nel n. 40 (3 ottobre 1956) dell'edizione belga del settimanale Tintin e nel n. 428 (3 gennaio 1957) di quella francese. Per questo settimanale l'autore creava avventure, per lo più automobilistiche, già dal 1953; in questa storia breve (4 pagine, più l'onore della copertina) il protagonista è un giovane meccanico italiano, Franco Moriani (con le caratteristiche e le fattezze del futuro Michel) che vince le Mille Miglia su una 3 litri Ferrari.
Sul n. 433 della stessa rivista, il 7 febbraio, esordisce finalmente Michel Vaillant in una nuova breve storia completa di quattro pagine, "Bon sang ne peut mentir" (Buon sangue non mente), che già presenta la fabbrica Vaillant con il padre Henri, il fratello ingegnere Jean-Pierre e la prima auto Vaillante in gara. L'edizione belga uscirà soltanto il 20 novembre, nel n. 47.
Le caratteristiche si consolidano in altre due avventure brevi nel corso del 1957: "La 24ème heure" (La 24a ora, in Belgio nel n. 24 del 12 giugno e in Francia nel n. 453 del 27 giugno) e "La Vaillante Marathon" (La Vaillante Maratona, o La maratona della strada, in Francia nel n. 468 del 10 ottobre e in Belgio nel n. 44 del 30 ottobre).
Finalmente nel 1958 viene pubblicata la prima storia lunga, "Le grand défi" (La grande sfida), in Francia dal n. 1 al n. 43 di Tintin e nell'edizione belga della rivista dal n. 486 (13 febbraio 1958) al n. 528 dello stesso anno. Apparirà finalmente in albo (Collection du Lombard, cartonato, dorso in tela rossa) nel 1959.
Le ragioni del successo di questa serie vanno ricercate soprattutto nell'estrema cura dedicata alla realizzazione delle auto e nel realismo dei circuiti internazionali, che l'autore studia alla moviola e fotografa direttamente, riproducendone ogni particolare, i luoghi in cui ambienta le scene, le persone, la vita della gente.
I piloti di carta creati dall'artista francese gareggiano spesso direttamente con i grandi campioni. Sembra che Jean Graton, incontrando Jacky Ickx, gli abbia detto che gli sarebbe piaciuto metterlo in una storia, ma che Michel Vaillant doveva vincere; Ickx gli avrebbe risposto: "Secondo, dietro Michel, mi sta bene!". Questo avviene effettivamente nell'avventura "De l'huile sur la piste" (Brivido a Monza, 1968-1969).
In tempi più recenti, per realizzare le avventure dell'eroe di carta si è messo al lavoro anche Philippe Graton, figlio del maestro francese.
In Italia le avventure di Michel Vaillant sono pubblicate per la prima volta dai Classici Audacia (1967-1970), poi dal Corriere dei piccoli e dagli Albi Ardimento, infine presentate in albi cartonati dalla casa editrice bolognese Alessandro Distribuzioni (AD).
Dopo il Duemila il personaggio ritorna in Italia in libreria e fumetteria con albi curati da Andrea Rivi per le edizioni ReNoir e, in edizione economica per l'edicola, come I fumetti della Gazzetta dello Sport, abbinati al quotidiano.
MEDIA: Nella seconda metà degli anni Sessanta la televisione francese realizza 13 telefilm di 26 minuti, che saranno trasmessi anche in Italia. Il ruolo di Michel Vaillant è affidato a Henry Grandsire, campione di Francia di Formula 3.
In seguito si parla anche di un lungometraggio, con Alain Prost nei panni del protagonista, ma non verrà realizzato.
Bisogna aspettare il 2003 perché le automobili Vaillante arrivino sul grande schermo, con il lungometraggio "Michel Vaillant" (in Italia "Adrenalina Blu - la leggenda di Michel Vaillant", 2004) realizzato da Louis-Pascal Couvelaire su sceneggiatura di Gilles Malençon e Luc Besson, interpretato da Segamore Stévenin (Michel Vaillant), Peter Youngblood Hills (Steve Warson), Jean-Pierre Cassel (Henri Vaillant), Béatrice Agenin (Élisabeth Vaillant), Philippe Bas (Jean-Pierre Vaillant), Estelle Caumartin (Laura Vaillant), Diane Kruger (Julie Wood), François Levantal (Bob Cramer), Philippe Lellouche (José) eccetera.
